Degree requirements for civil engineering
Civil engineers plan, design and work to improve infrastructure and facilities, such as buildings, roads, bridges, railways, tunnels, dams, power plants and water treatment systems. Becoming a civil engineer requires obtaining a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (BCE) or a bachelor of science in civil or civil engineering technology engineering. Overview The civil engineering degrees are approximately 120 credits depending on the college, often provide the opportunity for the student to focus on a particular area of interest. Concentrations may include construction engineering, environmental engineering, hydraulics, soil mechanics and foundation engineering structural , transportation and water resources. The degree requires some general courses and elective courses, a large part of science and mathematics, and a curriculum structured engineering with space for about 20 technical elective credits. Students with a specific concentration choose their electives accordingly. General Courses Required courses apart from the major may include computer science, chemistry, two semesters of physics, three semesters of calculus, two semesters of English composition and technical writing course. The student also has a number of liberal arts electives, such as history, political science and literature. Civil engineering courses Civil engineering courses typically include a range of study and the methodology of construction, construction management, dynamics, engineering and mathematical statistics, differential equations, environmental engineering, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, materials science, mechanical solids, soil mechanics, static analysis structural and design , surveying and transportation engineering. Practical Experience Some engineering schools offer cooperative education program where a student may alternate semesters of academic study with semesters of practical experience in the industry. The credit for this work experience can fulfill some elective technical requirements. Master’s degree Civil engineers can earn a master’s degree in a specific, such as those commonly offered at the bachelor’s degree program approach. Master’s programs usually accept applicants from other engineering fields too. If the applicant does not have a college degree in engineering, a number of prerequisites are required, such as calculus and differential statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials and fluid mechanics equations. The master’s degree usually requires 32 to 40 credits, and students usually complete a thesis or research project.
