5 science fiction films arriving on Netflix in 2024

The year 2024 promises a lot in terms of science fiction releases arriving on Netflix. With plots ranging from a giant talking spider in space to a social critique about housing in a dystopian future, the streaming platform is betting big on its productions.

And it is worth highlighting the extensive list of Hollywood stars in the films' cast, including Adam Sandler, Jennifer Lopez, Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Bruno Gagliasso, among others.

5. The Kitchen

According to the synopsis, the film is set in a dystopian future London, where all social housing has been eliminated. Izi (Kano) and Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman) struggle to navigate the world as residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to abandon its home.

4. The Astronaut

Starring Adam Sandler, The Astronaut (2024) is a science fiction drama inspired by the novel of the same name by Jaroslav Kalfar, released in 2017. The film presents the story of Jakub (Adam Sandler) on a mission at the end of the solar system, where he needs to deal not only with the immensity of the space, but of its solitude. 3. Rebel Moon — Part 2: The Scar Marker

The launch follows Rebel Moon – Part 1: The Fire Girl (2023), directed by Zack Snyder, the mind behind Justice League (2017) and Steel man (2013). The plot is set in a peaceful colony, located at the edge of the universe, which needs to face the tyranny of Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee).

2. Code 8: Renegades — Part II

Starring cousin duo Robbie (Upload) and Stephen Amell (Arrow), the sequence of Code 8: Renegades (2019) presents a dystopian future in which 4% of the population has abnormal powers. Most live below the poverty line and are heavily controlled by a high-tech robotic police force. Check out the trailer below;

1. The Electric State

The Electric State will have a stellar cast, featuring names like Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Giancarlo Esposito, Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Mackie and Ke Huy Quan. In a retro-futuristic setting, Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) is an orphan who must cross the North American West in search of her younger brother.

The film continues Joe and Anthony Russo's partnership with Netflix, following the success of The Gray Man (2022).

In addition to the titles mentioned, Netflix announced other projects that are in their initial stages and feature big Hollywood names, such as Atlas (2024), which will star Jennifer Lopez, Simu Liu and Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown. The thriller presents a woman's fight to protect humanity against Artificial Intelligence.

Among the projects being developed is the Brazilian film Bionics (2024), starring Bruno Gagliasso, which presents a future in which the progress of robotics has transformed Paralympic athletes into new sporting stars.

Another film that has been awaited and announced since 2022, but has not yet been released is The Mothership, starring Oscar winner Halle Berry. The plot tells the story of Sara and her children who, after the mysterious disappearance of her husband, discover an extraterrestrial object beneath their house.

Finally, another long-awaited title is the adaptation of the famous Bioshock video game franchise, directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Michael Green.
