Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005) remains one of the most memorable animated series of all time. Production ended in 2008 and, over three captivating seasons, we saw young Avatar Aang on a mission to master the four elements to put an end to the Fire Nation's devastating war against the world.

As Aang faces the imminent battle against Fire Lord Ozai, a moral crisis arises. His pacifist nature conflicts with the need to stop Ozai at all costs, considering the possibility of killing him to ensure peace.

When the young man encounters the Lion Turtle, Aang acquires the extraordinary ability of “energybending”. This power is decisive for the conclusion of the war, allowing Aang to disarm Ozai without resorting to lethal violence.

Loose ends left by The Legend of Aang

After the victory, the series shows that the Hundred Years War is finally over. However, some questions remained unanswered – at least, in the TV adaptation.

These loose ends were later addressed in comics that expand the Avatar universe. For example, in comics, we follow the Zuko's search for the truth surrounding the disappearance of his mother, Ursa.

After escaping from Ozai, she was given a new identity by the Mother of Faces. Her memories were erased and Ursa was renamed Noriko.

The comics not only solve mysteries left behind by the series, but also delve into new narratives. They detail the challenging post-conflict period, including the complex task of restoring peace.

Social issues such as colonialism are explored, enriching the plot and providing a deeper understanding of how Aang and his friends should help the Four Nations get back on their feet again.

Aang's Legacy

In addition to the war, the comics reveal details about Aang's later life. His accelerated aging, the result of decades frozen in an iceberg, did not hinder him on his journey.

Aang had 3 children with Katara, Tenzin, Kya and Bumi. Although he never met his grandchildren, Tenzin's children became airbenders tasked with rebuilding their grandfather's civilization.

The illustrated narratives were essential to continue the story and prepare the ground for the next Avatar, Korra. The member of the Southern Water Tribe was trained by Katara and debuted 4 seasons on Nickelodeon between 2012 and 2014.
