Mr. & Mrs. Smith: does the Amazon series have a reference to the film? Understand!

Last Friday, February 2nd, the Prime Video catalog received a very interesting addition that was awaited by the platform's subscribers: Mr. & Mrs. Smith. However, we are not talking about the 2005 film, with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, but rather the series based on the feature film directed by Doug Liman. The new feature features Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the lead roles, playing a new couple of secret agents.

In case you don't remember, in the 2005 film, we see the story of a seemingly perfect couple. However, both are secret agents and, at a certain point, are hired to kill each other, which triggers several confusions and explosive scenes, with the lovebirds discovering the hidden secrets of their marriage. The plot of the Amazon series is a little different (but not that much).

In the new production of Mr & Mrs Smith, the main couple is also made up of two professional and highly trained assassins. However, they know very well what they are and there are no mysteries between the two. In fact, they carry out many of their risky missions together, which brings a new dynamic to the story imagined by Doug Liman almost two decades ago.

However, the references between the film and the new series don't stop there.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith series references the origin film

Maybe it wasn't so clear at first glance, but the opening scene of the series Mr. & Mrs. Smith makes a clear reference to the feature film. In the scene in question, the audience is shown another couple of agents, played by Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza Gonzalez, implying that they would be similar representations to the characters played by Jolie and Pitt in the 2005 project.

Afterwards, the two are living in an isolated place, apparently retired from their violent services. However, the two are killed after being found by other killers in a scene full of intensity. With this the message becomes quite clear: the past is gone. In other words, what we see in the film no longer casts a shadow on what the series intends to present to the public. Here, there is a new dynamic, new characters and new narratives.

In this way, by referencing the film and ending a couple experienced in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the series distances itself from its source material, even if it borrows from its source in general. Without a doubt, an interesting way to establish a new idea for the story as a whole.

The action-packed finale

While the series begins to distance itself from the 2005 film, it is interesting to note that some scenes and moments from the Prime Video production still refer to the feature film. The iconic therapy scenes, for example, are transformed into an episode focused on the Smith couple's relationship in the new version.

Furthermore, during the last episode, we have cathartic moments that are quite similar to what we have in the film — spoilers follow. Just like in the feature film, John and Jane eventually face each other in the series, generating a sequence of action scenes.

Prime VideoThe Prime Video series has a lot of action.

In addition to the clash that takes place on the street, the two end up going home and facing each other inside their home. As a result, we have many shooting scenes that are reminiscent of the 2005 film. While the clash between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie continues to be more explosive, the series version also excels in the balance of emotion and action.

And you, have you started watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Prime Video?
