Despite the success of the OLED display on the current Switch, speculation points to changes in relation to its successor. While the device's hardware is expected to receive improvements, the company will reportedly adopt an eight-inch LCD screen to reduce costs.

The processor could be the T239, a customized variant of Nvidia's Custom Tegra, which could provide performance comparable to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Other speculations talk about a coprocessor chip to improve video output on 4K TVs, in addition to an increase in internal storage to 512GB.

The adoption of Nvidia's new hardware also opens the door for the adoption of recent technologies on the laptop. The device could arrive, for example, with DLSS, which uses artificial intelligence to render games with higher quality.

So far, however, everything is just speculation.

While details on design, battery life, and connectivity are scarce, the overall design of the Switch 2 is expected to follow the philosophy of the original model, but with improvements. The device can count on ergonomic improvements to the Joy-Cons to better deal with current drift problems, for example.

The current estimate for battery life on both the original Switch and the Switch OLED is 4.5 to 9 hours. With more powerful internal components, the expectation is to use a larger battery, in addition to the adoption of technologies such as Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 for faster streaming and downloads.

Backward compatibility

There is also the dilemma of backwards compatibility. With the new generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles migrating their games to the latest devices, the tendency is for Nintendo to also adopt a similar positioning.

In a Q&A session for investors (via Ars Technica), Nintendo's president said, “As for the transition from the Nintendo Switch to the next-generation machine, we want to do as much as possible to ensure a smooth transition for our customers using their Nintendo Account.”

With the statement, it is not exactly clear whether or not the Switch 2 will be an upgrade from the original Switch. However, considering current speculation and market standards, the company will possibly not abandon the Switch library.
