Rise of the Rio Grande was a gigantic tropical island near Brazil, says study

A team of scientists from the University of São Paulo (USP) published a new study pointing out that The Rio Grande Rise was once a gigantic tropical island covered in vegetation and minerals. Published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports, the article suggests that this happened approximately between 45 million and 40 million years ago, as indicated by the formation's sediments.

In a statement published by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP), scientists describe that they collected data for ten years to better understand the geological formation of the region.
