Scientists discover asteroid hours before it enters Earth's atmosphere

In a rare celestial occurrence, A small asteroid dramatically entered Earth's atmosphere, lighting up the sky over Berlin in the early hours of January 21. Called 2024 BXI, this space rock was not only an asteroid, but also one of the few that scientists identified before its arrival, representing only the eighth such occurrence in recorded history.

The discovery of 2024 BXI can be credited to Krisztián Sárneczky, a Hungarian astronomer known for his work on asteroid tracking. Sárneczky identified the asteroid and predicted its trajectory with the 60-cm Schmidt telescope at the mountain station of Piszkésteto.
