The red carpet is rolling out for the race for the coveted Academy Award in 2024. The 2024 Best Picture Oscar nominees promise fierce competition with their dramatic stories, satirical comedies and powerful narratives.

Barbie

After being kicked out of Barbieland for being a less than perfect looking doll, Barbie (Margot Robbie) leaves for the human world in search of true happiness. Under the direction of Greta Gerwig, the film topped last year's box office by reaching the mark of 1.446 billion dollars.

Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan's award-winning film is based on the book “American Prometheus” to tell the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) as he works on the Manhattan Project with a team of scientists, leading to the development of the atomic bomb.

The cast with Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt won several awards, including Best Dramatic Film at the Golden Globes.

The Rejected

Another award-winning film on the exhibition circuit is the feature The Rejected. According to the official synopsis, we follow a grumpy teacher at a prestigious American school, who is forced to stay on campus to take care of the group of students he has nowhere to go to during the Christmas holidays. That's when he develops a bond with a troublemaking student and the head cook. Directed by Alexander Payne.

Zone of Interest

Studio A24 is specializing in producing complex dramas with a dark tone to compete for statuettes. In Zone of Interestwe follow a love affair between a Nazi officer and the wife of a commandant at the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The plot becomes increasingly tense as the husband begins to distrust his partner's fidelity. Sandra Hüller, Christian Friedel and Johann Karthaus are part of the film directed by Jonathan Glazer.

Flower Moon Assassins

Martin Scorsese's newest film, Flower Moon Assassinsaddresses the mysterious homicides of members of the Osage tribe that took place in the 1920s. The story triggers a major investigation involving the powerful J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the FBI.

The film with a box office of 156.4 million dollars stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, Lily Gladstone as Mollie Burkhart and Robert De Niro as William Hale.

Poor Creatures

The fantasy comedy of Poor Creatures follows young Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) as she is brought back to life by scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Wanting to see more of the world, she runs away with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) and travels the world in search of equality and liberation.

  • Where to watch: Opens on February 1st in theaters.

Past lives

Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) are two deeply connected childhood friends who grow apart after Nora moves to the US. Twenty years later, they meet again in New York to confront notions of destiny, love and choices.

Past lives is by Celine Song and the main cast is completed with the performance of John Magaro, interpreter of Arthur, Nora's husband.

Conductor

Bradley Cooper directs and stars in the film Conductor when playing Leonard Bernstein, renowned American composer. In the film, we meet his great love story with actress Felicia Montealegreplayed by Carey Mulligan.

American Fiction

Jeffrey Wright plays Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a writer and professor of English literature frustrated by the popularity of books that perpetuate racial stereotypes. The film American Fiction stars Sterling K. Brown and Issa Rae in his adaptation of Percival Everett's novel “Erasure.”

Anatomy of a Fall

In Anatomy of a Fall, The family drama of Sandra, a German writer, begins when her husband, Samuel, is found dead where the couple lived with their 11-year-old son, Daniel. The situation becomes more complicated when the police begin investigating Sandra as the main suspect in the homicide.

  • Where to watch: Opens on February 22nd in theaters.
