Disney invests US$1.5 billion in the owner of Fortnite; understand why

The games market is busy this week — but there's always room for more bombshells. Surprisingly, the Disney announced, last Wednesday night (07), that it is entering into a new partnership with Epic Games and investing US$1.5 billion in the purchase of shares in the company.

In the announcement, which took place in a business presentation, the North American giant stated that the investment is part of a new strategy to bring exciting news in a new universe to the Fortnite.

The intention, apparently, is to create a new map inspired by various properties of the house, such as Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and much more. The new experience will be based on the Unreal Engine and will allow players to create “their own stories and experiences, express their passions in a special way, and share content with each other.”

Partnership with Epic Games marks Disney's “biggest entry into the world of games”

Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together beloved Disney brands and franchises with the immensely popular Fortnite into a transformational new universe of games and entertainment,” explained Disney CEO Robert Iger.

The venture will mark “Disney's biggest entry into the world of gaming” and will offer significant opportunities for growth and expansion. “We can't wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in new and innovative ways,” concluded Iger.

The CEO and founder of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, also seems very excited about the partnership. “Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of uniting their worlds with ours in Fortnite“, said the executive. “Now we are collaborating on something completely new to build a persistent and open ecosystem that will unite communities Disney and Fortnite.

Disney Universes in Fortnite are not yet scheduled to be released

The partnership is certainly great news for fans of both brands. However, unfortunately, neither Disney nor Epic Games have released any details or dates regarding these future collaborations between the two companies.

However, knowing Epic Games' creativity in Fortnite, as with their countless collaborations, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to create expectations for different skins from the Disney universe. Who knows, maybe there will be some cosmetics from Kingdom Hearts around. Ever wonder?
