Hacker convicted by Nintendo believes he was arrested to 'serve as an example'

It's no secret to anyone that Nintendo is one of the strictest companies when it comes to piracy. Many hackers have fallen in recent years, but one name in particular, Doug Bowser, caught the media's attention — not because of his villainous (or executive) surname, but because of his “work” pirating Switch and 3DS ROMs. He even recently suggested that his sentence was to “serve as an example”.

Bowser, who is a programmer and has worked with electronics his entire life, had been pirating ROMs on the illegal market since 2013, when he worked under the banner of the hacker group Team-Xecuter. Charged with 11 different crimes, he was arrested in September 2020 and, rather than face trial, pleaded guilty to two sentences.
